Color Palette

Continuity between Designs

All design elements are related and having a consistent color palette helps tie them together.

Ariel wanted bright, fun colors to underscore the comedic script. She choose an orange sherbet wall color for the set, with pops of blue and green in the set dressing (pillows, tablecloth, etc.)

The color palette above was the final product. I chose to dress each girl in colors based on the flag of the country she was from, as well as the colors of the vintage flight bags that were being used as props. The flight bags were part of a plot point and were borrowed from another theater, so we could not change their colors.

Gloria, the American, worked for TWA and her bag was burgundy/red with off-white lettering. Gretchen, the German, worked for Lufthansa and her bag was dark blue with yellow trim. Gabriella, the Italian, worked for Alitalia, and her bag was green. Because of the bag color, I had to shift one of Gretchen's colors from black to navy blue. I also had to shift the red in Gloria's dress to a darker red that would coordinate with her bag.

Once the colors were chosen for the girls, I chose to coordinate Bernard and Robert with the girl each one ended up with. Bernard ended up with Gabriella, who was wearing lime green and red, so he was dressed in green patterned pants with an ivory jacket. Robert was paired with Gretchen, who was wearing gold, red, and navy. His costume was shades of gold, tan, and burgundy.

Bert was the only character who did not coordinate with anyone. He was also the only one in black, to reinforce his negative outlook on everything.
