Ariel Lauryn, Director

A rendering of the proposed set, including all SEVEN practical (operational) doors. The final build included a landing center, between the two angled doors, giving some varied levels to work with.
The Director's Vision
The Map for All Design Choices
In theatre, the Director's vision is the inspiration behind all the design choices, the thing that ties all the visual and technical elements together. Ariel Lauryn, the director for the UNA production of Boeing Boeing, had a specific vision from the beginning.

With her background in clowning and physical theatre, Ariel wanted the opportunity to introduce students to the joys of being able to truly play in the space of the play. She wanted to incorporate lots of physical gags and large movements, a la The Three Stooges.

The play was written in 1960, but there are no references to a specific year in the script. Ariel was open to setting the action anytime in the 1960s and the later 60s seemed like a better fit for the story. The early 60s were still constrained by the societal rules that governed the conservative 50s, while the late 60s are more associated with social change and freedom of choice.

She liked the idea of focusing more on the "mod" and psychedelic movements and the influence of the hippie generation.

She also created a playlist for the sound designer to help create the mood she wanted. Use the Spotify player on the left to listen.
