Costuming
Learning to sew was a given in my family. Learning to design wasn't far behind, even though no one called it that. It wasn't unusual for my mom to use 3-4 different commercial patterns to get the look she wanted. It never occurred to me that everyone didn't do that.
I worked as a stitcher in the costume shop at my first professional theatre job, and continued that in graduate school, where I also learned how to drape and draft my own patterns. Since then I have created costumes for many shows and now am the resident costuming expert in the small university program where I work. Some of my most recent designs are below.
